The CSCS Green Card (Labourer Card) is a mandatory requirement for working on most construction sites in the UK. If you’re starting a career in construction, this is your first essential step. In this guide, you’ll learn how to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Operatives Test, complete the necessary training, and apply for your card.

What is the CSCS Green Card?

The Green Card proves that a worker has received basic health and safety training and understands the standard safety requirements of UK construction sites. It is issued by the CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) and required by most employers.

What You Need to Get the Green Card

To obtain a Labourer Card, you must complete both of the following:

  1. Pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Operatives Test
    • Fee: £50
    • Valid for 2 years
  2. Complete a recognised Health & Safety qualification

Key Changes from February 2025

  • First-time Green Cards will be issued for 2 years only
  • If you confirm ongoing employment in construction, you may renew the card for 5 years 
  • The CITB HS&E Test will be valid for 3 years
