The HS&E test for Managers and Professionals, and its accompanying revision materials, has been updated to ensure that it is suitable for today’s managers and professionals, reflecting changes in legislation, working practices, new technology and industry needs.

The CITB HS&E MAP test helps to raise standards across the industry. It ensures that managers and professionals have a good level of health, safety and environmental awareness.

Managers and professionals in the construction industry are responsible for complying with, embedding and implementing effective HS&E practices. This test confirms you have the knowledge to lead by example and create safer working environments.

About the Test

The test lasts for 45 minutes and consists of 50 questions.

The test structure has been designed to enable you to demonstrate knowledge across the following six key areas:

  • A: Legal and Management
  • B: Health and Welfare
  • C: General Safety
  • D: High Risk Activities
  • E: Environment
  • F: Specialist Activities

Based on industry feedback, six additional subjects that are all hugely relevant to today’s managers have been included:

  • Mental health
  • Leadership
  • Occupational health governance
  • Behavioural safety
  • Wellbeing
  • Environmental sustainability

Question Types

There are four different styles of knowledge question that you may be presented with in your test:

  • Single response questions
  • Multiple response questions
  • True/false questions
  • Scenario-based questions

Pass Mark

The pass mark for the Managers and Professionals test is 90%.

To pass, you need to answer at least 45 out of 50 questions correctly.

The pass mark has been set at this level to ensure that there is consistency across all Health, Safety & Environment tests and that managers and professionals demonstrate a high level of competence.

What to Do on the Day of the Test

At the test centre, your identity and exam registration will be confirmed. A photograph will be taken for security purposes.

The test lasts 45 minutes and includes 50 questions. Results are given immediately, and you will receive a certificate confirming your score.

Identification Requirements

You must bring valid identification to the test centre. Accepted IDs include:

  • UK driving licence (with photo)
  • Valid passport

If you lack these, two alternative forms of ID are required, such as:

  • National Insurance card
  • Recent bank statement
  • Utility bill

Test Results

You will receive your test results immediately upon completion. If you pass, you will receive an official CITB certificate which is valid for 2 years.

If you do not pass, you may retake the test after 3 days. We recommend additional revision before attempting the test again.

Rescheduling a Test

If you feel that you need more time to revise in advance of your scheduled test, you have the option to reschedule.

Reschedule Online

For tests being taken at Pearson VUE centres, you can reschedule for free online up to 72 hours in advance of your scheduled test.

Reschedule by Phone

To reschedule over the phone, please call 0800 024 24 43.

For tests being taken at our ITC centre, please contact us directly to reschedule at least one week before your scheduled test.

Note: A £5 administration charge may apply for phone rescheduling.

Cancelling the Test

Cancellations made more than 72 hours in advance may be eligible for a refund or credit towards a future booking. Please review our cancellation policy when booking or contact us for more details.

CITB offers a variety of access arrangements for candidates taking the HS&E test who require additional support.

The following access arrangements are available:

  • Extra time for candidates with learning difficulties
  • Reader assistance
  • Accessible test room facilities
  • Translation services for non-native English speakers (where available)

The HS&E test for Managers and Professionals is required for the following CSCS cards:

Common Questions About the HS&E Test for Managers and Professionals

What is the difference between the Managers test and other HS&E tests?

The Managers and Professionals test covers more advanced topics including leadership, mental health, occupational health governance, and environmental sustainability. It requires a higher pass mark (90%) compared to other tests and is designed for those in managerial or professional roles.

Do I need a construction job to take the test?

No, anyone can book and sit the HS&E test for Managers and Professionals. You do not need to have a construction job to take the test.

How long are test results valid?

Test results are valid for 2 years. After this period, you may need to retake the test when applying for or renewing your CSCS card.

Can I get a CSCS card without passing the test?

No, passing the appropriate HS&E test is mandatory for obtaining any CSCS card. For managerial roles, you must pass the Managers and Professionals test.

What happens if I fail the test?

If you do not achieve the required 90% pass mark, you can retake the test after 3 days. We strongly recommend additional revision before your next attempt, particularly focusing on areas where you had difficulty.

How is the Managers test different from the previous version?

The test was updated in June 2023 to reflect changes in legislation, working practices and new technology. It now includes additional subjects such as mental health, leadership, and environmental sustainability that are essential for modern construction management.

What should I bring on the test day?

Can I use a calculator during the test?
