Choosing the Right CITB Test
Whether you are applying for your first CSCS card or upgrading an existing one, passing the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test is mandatory. There are three levels of CITB tests, and selecting the correct one is crucial for your certification:
Test Level | Suitable For |
---|---|
Operatives Test | Provisional Red Card, Green Labourer Card |
Operatives or Specialist Test | Blue Skilled Worker Card, Red Apprentice/Trainee Card, Gold Supervisor Card |
Specialist, Managers, or Professionals Test | Black Manager Card, Red Technical/Supervisory Card, White Professionally Qualified Person Card |
Operatives Test
If you are applying for a Provisional Red Card or a Green Labourer Card, this is the test for you. Many candidates underestimate its difficulty and fail due to a lack of preparation. Investing time in revision is essential for success.
Operatives or Specialist Test
This test is suitable for individuals pursuing a Blue Skilled Worker Card, Red Apprentice/Trainee Card, or a Gold Supervisor Card. It is more detailed than the basic Operatives Test and requires a strong understanding of construction safety, environmental hazards, and industry regulations. Specific prerequisites may apply.
Specialist, Managers, or Professionals Test
Candidates seeking a Black Manager Card, Red Technical or Supervisory Card, or White Professionally Qualified Person Card must pass this advanced-level test. Book your test below.
How Difficult Is the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test?
The difficulty level varies based on preparation. Since you need at least 45 out of 50 correct answers to pass, it is advisable to study thoroughly in advance.
Do You Need a Construction Job to Take the CITB Test?
No, employment in the construction industry is not a prerequisite for taking the CITB HS&E test. Anyone can register and sit for the exam by paying the required fee. Once obtained, the CSCS card remains valid regardless of whether you choose to use it immediately.
When Do CITB Test Results Expire?
Technically, the CITB test results do not have an expiration date. However, if you apply for a new CSCS card or renew an existing one after more than two years, you may be required to retake the test.
Can You Get a CSCS Card Without Taking the CITB Test?
No, obtaining a CSCS card without passing the Health, Safety & Environment Test is not possible. There are no exceptions to this rule.
What Happens If You Take the Wrong CITB Test?
Upon arrival at the test centre, staff will verify your exam details. If you are not registered for the correct test, you will be turned away and advised on the appropriate test to take. To avoid this issue, ensure that you choose the right test when booking your exam.
