Advanced Health and Safety Testing for Construction Managers

The HSE test for managers and professionals (also known as the HSE MAP test or CITB Managers and Professionals test) is the most advanced level of construction health and safety assessment in the UK. Designed for construction managers, site supervisors, and senior professionals, this rigorous examination evaluates your knowledge of leadership, occupational health governance, CDM regulations, and environmental sustainability.

Our Manchester test centre provides professional testing services for the HSE test for managers and professionals as well as the HSE specialist supervisors test. Whether you’re a site manager applying for a CSCS Black Manager Card or a supervisor requiring specialist certification, we offer flexible scheduling, immediate results, and expert support at competitive rates.

At Dynamis Education, we understand the high standards expected of construction industry leaders. The HSE managers’ test requires a 90% pass mark and covers significantly more advanced content than operative or specialist tests, making thorough preparation essential.

Having the right skills is essential in all occupations, and skills don’t come much more important than health and safety. Workers who pass the Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test for Managers and Professionals are highly valued by their employers and the industry at large, because it confirms that they have the certified skills to keep themselves – and those around them – safe.

The HS&E test for Managers and Professionals, and its accompanying revision materials, has been updated to ensure that it is suitable for today’s managers and professionals, reflecting changes in legislation, working practices, new technology and industry needs.

Who Needs the HSE Test for Managers and Professionals?

The HSE test for managers and professionals is required for senior construction personnel who hold management, supervisory, or professional roles. This advanced health and safety assessment demonstrates your capability to lead by example and implement effective safety practices across construction sites.

Common Questions About the HS&E Test for Managers and Professionals

What is the difference between the Managers test and other HS&E tests?

The Managers and Professionals test covers more advanced topics including leadership, mental health, occupational health governance, and environmental sustainability. It requires a higher pass mark (90%) compared to other tests and is designed for those in managerial or professional roles.

Do I need a construction job to take the test?

No, anyone can book and sit the HS&E test for Managers and Professionals. You do not need to have a construction job to take the test.

How long are test results valid?

Test results are valid for 2 years. After this period, you may need to retake the test when applying for or renewing your CSCS card.

Can I get a CSCS card without passing the test?

No, passing the appropriate HS&E test is mandatory for obtaining any CSCS card. For managerial roles, you must pass the Managers and Professionals test.

What happens if I fail the test?

If you do not achieve the required 90% pass mark, you can retake the test after 3 days. We strongly recommend additional revision before your next attempt, particularly focusing on areas where you had difficulty.

How is the Managers test different from the previous version?

The test was updated in June 2023 to reflect changes in legislation, working practices and new technology. It now includes additional subjects such as mental health, leadership, and environmental sustainability that are essential for modern construction management.

What should I bring on the test day?

You must bring valid photographic identification (UK driving licence or passport). If you do not have these, bring two alternative forms of ID such as a National Insurance card or recent bank statement.

Can I use a calculator during the test?

The test does not require complex calculations. Any necessary calculations can be completed without a calculator. Electronic devices including calculators are not permitted in the test room.

Is the HSE test for managers and professionals difficult?

Yes, the HSE test for managers and professionals is the most challenging construction health and safety test available. The 90% pass mark, broad content scope, and inclusion of topics like CDM regulations, mental health, and environmental governance make it significantly more difficult than operative tests. However, with proper preparation using official CITB materials, most candidates pass on their first or second attempt.

How long should I study for the HSE managers test?

We recommend 3-6 weeks of preparation for the HSE managers test, depending on your experience level. Experienced managers with recent training should allow 3-4 weeks. Those new to management roles or without recent construction experience should prepare for 6-8 weeks using the official GT200 revision book and practice tests.

What’s included in the HSE specialist supervisors test?

The HSE specialist supervisors test includes 44 core health and safety questions covering general construction safety, plus 6 specialist questions focused on supervisory responsibilities. Topics include team supervision, implementing safety procedures, conducting risk assessments, and complying with CDM regulations as a supervisor.

Can I take the HSE test for managers if I’m not currently a manager?

Yes, anyone can take the HSE test for managers and professionals regardless of current employment status. Many people take this test before applying for management positions or when transitioning into senior roles. However, to apply for a CSCS Black Manager Card, you’ll also need relevant qualifications and experience.

What’s the pass rate for the HSE managers test?

While official pass rate statistics aren’t published, the HSE test for managers and professionals has a lower pass rate than operative tests due to its increased difficulty. Candidates who use official CITB revision materials and allow adequate preparation time have significantly higher pass rates. Many candidates who fail do so because of inadequate preparation.

Do I need the HSE managers test or HSE specialist supervisors test?

This depends on your role and CSCS card requirements. The HSE specialist supervisors test is for supervisors, foremen, and team leaders applying for Gold Supervisor Cards. The full HSE test for managers and professionals is for senior managers and professionals applying for Black Manager Cards or White Professional Cards. Use the CSCS card finder or call us for guidance.

How is the HSE MAP test different from the old managers test?

The HSE test for managers and professionals was updated in June 2023. The new version includes contemporary topics like mental health, leadership, behavioural safety, and environmental sustainability that weren’t in previous versions. The content is broader and more relevant to modern construction management, though the pass mark remains 90%.

Where can I get HSE test practice questions?

Official HSE managers test practice questions are available from CITB resources including the GT200 revision book, the CITB MAP mobile app, and the PC download software. We recommend using only official materials, as third-party practice tests may not reflect the current test content accurately.
